Frankincense: The Ancient Oil

Frankincense: The Ancient Oil

Since the rule of Pharaohs over Egypt, Frankincense essential oil has been coveted for its
wide array of uses. The first recorded use of Frankincense essential oil was its
implementation in the process of mummification by the Egyptians. The embalmers would
apply Frankincense onto the skin of the deceased to preserve the body’s quality and
prevent deterioration. Thus, this is why most mummies extracted from their tombs
are still intact and preserved thousands of years later. The reasoning behind the mummies amazing preservation is the Frankincense’s unique viscosity and chemical properties.

Frankincense is a scraggly but hardy tree, which is mainly grown in the Middle East. Its essential oil is derived from the tree’s sappy resin. A good quality Frankincense essential oil should be steam distilled from the resin and should have a woodsy “balsamic” scent. It should also have a medium thickness, much like a thinned maple syrup.

Frankincense contains over two hundred molecular compounds that supply it with a wide variation of properties. For modern purposes Frankincense’s uses are typically broken down into three categories, Beauty, Health, and Spirituality.

Beauty uses mainly pertain to the skin and cuticles. Frankincense is most often used to fade cosmetic imperfections, such as scars and stretch marks. It is also evens skin tone and can be used as a wrinkle preventative. Alternatively, mixing Frankincense with Lavender essential oil and a carrier, such as Apricot Kernel Oil, creates a wonderful cuticle softener.

When it comes to health benefits Frankincense is bountiful. A few common conditions in which Frankincense essential oil is used include burns, skin ulcers, Eczema, Cold/Flu, and boils to name a few. However, Frankincense’s benefits reach far beyond the physical scope of health. Frankincense’s ability to aid in relieving anxiety, stress, and several forms on nervous conditions make it a must for anyone with the goal of retaining or regaining their mental stability and balance.

When you mention Frankincense to most individuals their first response will be, “ You mean that fragrance stuff in the Bible”? However, Frankincense has deeply rooted spiritual properties that will benefit someone of any faith, religious sect or belief system. In its original purpose Frankincense was used as incense during spiritual gatherings. Today, however we find Frankincense often burned in yoga studios, homes, and temples of worship. It has become the scent most commonly used as an aid to reach deeper into meditation. This is due to Frankincense’s natural ability to slow and deepen the breathing of those who partake of its inhalation. In addition, the simple act of inhaling Frankincense sends chemical signals into our brain's limbic system signaling the release of dopamine, a natural relaxation chemical produced by our bodies. This extra shot of dopamine allows us to release our daily stress and therefore deepen our conscious meditation ritual.

The most important thing to remember when using Frankincense or any other essential oil is moderation. Essential oils are highly concentrated and require careful measurement when blending for therapeutic purposes. The term “ less is more” definitely applies to the practice of Aromatherapy. To be sure of how much essential oil to use and proper forms of application, it is best to consult a Certified Aromatherapist They will be able to direct you on how to properly prepare a blend for your intended use. In addition, always make sure you essential oils are therapeutic grade. This means they are unadulterated by chemicals, additives, and alcohols.

Aromatherapy is an easy and adaptable practice into your life as long as you follow a few simple guidelines. First find a quality supplier of essential oils. ISO certified farms and aromatherapy companies are your safest and most reliable choice. Remember to consult a knowledgeable and certified Aromatherapist before blending, most Aromatherapist will share their expertise free of charge or for a minimal fee. Lastly, Aromatherapy is a complete body experience so sit back, relax, and enjoy the process. After all you deserve it!
